Sydney, Melbourne
& the Great Ocean Road

Sydney  ·  Melbourne  ·  Great Ocean Road | Mar–May, Sep–Nov | Fly into Sydney, Out of Melbourne

Australia operates at a different pace, unhurried, generous, absurdly beautiful in places you don't expect. Sydney delivers the postcard moments. Melbourne gives you the lanes, the coffee, and a food scene that quietly rivals anywhere in the world. The Great Ocean Road dismantles everything you thought you knew about coastal scenery. We fly open jaw, into Sydney, out of Melbourne, so we move in one clean direction and never retrace our steps. Sydney to Melbourne is 870km apart; flying return and backtracking wastes two full days and costs the same.

Before You Go

Open jaw routing. Fly into Sydney, out of Melbourne. The fares are usually identical to a return. You save two days of backtracking and one domestic flight, and the route flows logically south and west through the country's best corner.

ETA required. Indian passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authority before boarding. Apply through the official Australian ETA app or the Department of Home Affairs website. Processing is usually instant and costs around AUD 20. Do not confuse this with a tourist visa, they are separate documents.

Driving in Australia. Australia drives on the left with the steering wheel on the right, exactly like India. If you are comfortable driving at home the rental car on the Great Ocean Road is completely intuitive. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP) before you leave India from your nearest Regional Transport Office — one working day, a few hundred rupees — and carry it alongside your Indian licence. Book the car at least two weeks ahead for the best rates.

Transit cards. Two cities, two cards. Opal Card in Sydney, Myki in Melbourne. Pick up the Opal Card at Sydney Airport on arrival. Pick up Myki at Melbourne Airport or Southern Cross Station. Both cover all public transport in their respective cities.

Day by Day
The Routing
Open Jaw, Into Sydney, Out of Melbourne
Fly into Sydney, exit from Melbourne. The flow is: Sydney (4 nights) → internal flight to Melbourne → Great Ocean Road overnight → Yarra Valley → Melbourne departure. Clean, logical, no doubling back. The internal Sydney–Melbourne flight is 1.5 hours and cheap; book it as soon as you confirm your dates.

Best Time to Go
March is ideal, Sydney and Melbourne are in early autumn, 22–26°C, no summer humidity, beaches still warm. September–November (spring) is equally good. Avoid January–February: school holidays, peak prices, 35°C+ in Melbourne.
🏨
Where to Stay
Sydney · Melbourne · Apollo Bay
Sydney: CBD is the right base, close to Circular Quay, the Opera House and the Botanic Garden, 15 minutes by taxi from the airport. The Rocks neighbourhood is more atmospheric if you want something boutique. Bondi is beautiful but inconvenient for the harbour sights. Melbourne: CBD, near Flinders Street Station. Melbourne's café culture and laneways are concentrated here, and trams are free within the city centre. South Yarra and Fitzroy are stylish alternatives for a more local feel. Great Ocean Road: Stay overnight in Apollo Bay, it's the midpoint of the road and positions you perfectly for the Twelve Apostles the next morning before day-trippers arrive from Melbourne.

What We Skipped, and Why
Blue Mountains. It's a full day out of Sydney, requires an early start, and in March it can be extremely hot with harsh midday sun. We felt Sydney's harbour days were more rewarding for the time. If you're visiting in cooler months (June–August), the Blue Mountains is worth considering, but it competes with a Sydney harbour day and loses.

First-Timer Notes
What Nobody Tells You
Australia is enormous and distances are deceptive on a map, always check travel times, not just kilometres. The Opal Card (Sydney) and Myki card (Melbourne) handle all public transport; pick both up on arrival. Tipping is not mandatory in Australia, it's a pleasant surprise if you do. Uber works in both cities. Cafés in Melbourne take their coffee more seriously than almost anywhere on earth, a flat white here is a different drink from a flat white anywhere else.

Cafe Sydney (rooftop, harbour views), Bennelong (inside the Opera House shell, book ahead, the building alone is worth it) or Aria (Michelin, harbour views). All three need a reservation made before you land.

The Most Important Tip on This Page
Do not day-trip the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne. The drive is 5 hours return before you've stopped anywhere. Stay overnight in Apollo Bay, see the Twelve Apostles the next morning with almost no one else there, then drive back inland. The difference between the dawn Apostles and the midday Apostles is the difference between a private view and a theme park.
9–10
Great Ocean Road · Apollo Bay
The Most Beautiful Coastal Drive in the World
Rent a car in Melbourne. Drive west along the Great Ocean Road: the road hugs clifftops above the Southern Ocean for 243km. Stop at Lorne, Kennett River for koalas in the wild, Cape Otway for the lighthouse. Stay overnight in Apollo Bay, the right midpoint, one hour from the Twelve Apostles. Day 9: Drive to the Twelve Apostles before 9am. The limestone stacks standing in the surf in early morning light, before the tour buses arrive from Melbourne, is one of those views that stays with you. Loch Ard Gorge nearby. Return to Melbourne via the inland highway (3 hours, faster than retracing the coast).

Souvenirs
A bottle of Yarra Valley Pinot Noir. Tim Tams, buy from a supermarket, not an airport stand. Vegemite (required, whether you like it or not). Merino wool scarves or socks. Indigenous art prints from a reputable Melbourne gallery. Ugg boots if you can manage the luggage.
11
Yarra Valley
Wine Country, an Hour from the City
Full-day tour of the Yarra Valley (8 hours, best booked through a tour operator, driving and wine tasting don't mix). Victoria's premier wine region is 50km from Melbourne CBD: cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, cellar doors, farm-to-table lunches. ArtVo immersive art museum or Fitzroy Gardens on return to the city. Crown Casino if you want a final Melbourne evening with energy.
Melbourne Airport
Souvenirs
Woolworths or Coles for Tim Tams, Vegemite and Arnott's biscuits. Dan Murphy's for Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, Devil's Corner packs well. Ugg boots from a dedicated store, not an airport gift shop.
12
Melbourne
Slow Morning, Souvenirs, Brunswick Street
No agenda today. Melbourne mornings without a schedule are best spent with a long breakfast in Fitzroy or Brunswick, Brunswick Street has the highest concentration of good cafés per block of any street in Australia. Afternoon at St Kilda beach or a tram ride down to Port Melbourne. Pick up Yarra Valley wine and Tim Tams from the Woolworths at Southern Cross Station for gifts.
Final Dinner
Attica in Ripponlea, one of Australia's best restaurants, book months ahead. Alternatively, Vue de Monde at the top of the Rialto Tower for the view alone. Both require advance reservations.
13–14
Melbourne · Wind Down
Final Two Days: Your Melbourne, Your Rules
These two days are deliberately unplanned. Melbourne reveals itself best when you're not trying to see it, a Saturday morning market, a record shop in Collingwood, an afternoon cricket match at the MCG if the timing works, a long lunch that becomes dinner. If you haven't done the NGV yet, now is the time. Optional day trip: the Mornington Peninsula is an hour's drive, wineries, Peninsula Hot Springs, and a very good cheese shop at Arthur's Seat.

Melbourne → Home
6:30am Flight, Final Flat White
Early departure: 6:30am means a 4am wake-up. Bags packed the night before. Have your last Melbourne coffee at the airport if you must. The city will make you want to come back. It always does.

The Twelve Apostles Helicopter

From the ground the Twelve Apostles are impressive. From directly above with the Southern Ocean spread beneath you, it is a completely different experience.

Several operators run 15 to 20-minute flights from a helipad beside the viewing platform. Book in advance, it fills quickly in summer. Ask specifically for the front two seats. The cost is around AUD 145 to 175 per person for the standard circuit. Weather-dependent: some mornings cancel at short notice, which is the best reason to stay overnight at Apollo Bay rather than doing the drive as a day trip.

Common Questions

Is 15 days enough for Sydney and Melbourne?
Yes, comfortably. Four days in Sydney covers the harbour, the eastern suburbs walk, Taronga Zoo and one day trip. Five days in Melbourne is generous for the city, markets, sporting venues and Philip Island. The Great Ocean Road adds two days. You will leave wanting more, Australia always produces that feeling, but you will not feel rushed.
Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Australia?
Yes. You need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority). Apply through the Australian ETA app or the Department of Home Affairs website before travel. The process is usually instant and costs approximately AUD 20. This is separate from a tourist visa and must be arranged before you board your flight.
Is driving the Great Ocean Road difficult?
No, particularly for Indian drivers. Australia drives on the left with the steering wheel on the right, identical to India. The road itself is a well-maintained two-lane highway with clear signage. The only tricky sections are the mountain curves before Apollo Bay in low visibility. Drive it west to east, starting from Torquay, to keep the ocean on your side.
Is the Philip Island Penguin Parade worth it?
Yes. The little penguins emerging from the surf at dusk and waddling to their burrows is genuinely charming and unlike any other wildlife experience. No torches, no flash photography: you watch in near-darkness as they go about their evening routine entirely unbothered. Book tickets online in advance, particularly for weekends and peak season.
Sydney or Melbourne, which is better?
Different, not comparable. Sydney has one of the great harbours of the world and the best single urban setting we have seen. Melbourne has better food, better coffee, better arts and a more European street-level character. Sydney is more immediately beautiful. Melbourne grows on you. This itinerary gives you both.
What is the helicopter over the Twelve Apostles actually like?
The flight takes 15 to 20 minutes from a helipad directly beside the viewing platform. The standard circuit covers the full formation from above and along the coastline. Request the front two seats at booking for the clearest unobstructed views. Cost is approximately AUD 145 to 175 per person.

What to Pack - March

March is late summer. Sydney and Melbourne sit around 22 to 28C during the day. Light summer clothes work well with one layer for Melbourne evenings, which can turn cool unexpectedly. The Great Ocean Road clifftops are frequently windy even on warm days: keep a jacket in the car. Philip Island at dusk is cold, bring something specifically warm for the penguin parade. Good walking shoes throughout: the Bondi to Coogee walk is 6km of cliff paths. Sunscreen is essential: Australian UV is significantly stronger than India even in autumn.
